In Her Voice- A series of workshops honoring female artists

For several months now, I have been exploring new workshops I would like to facilitate. My hope was to study a “master” and create by using their techniques and style. In doing so, I discovered artists I had knew very little about (and also a few I knew something about but now know quite a bit more). In the end I created a series of six at first. I love the artists, and their style. The first series studied six artists, five men and one woman. Each had something to teach about the foundation of art. Each had a story. But then I dug deeper. It felt as though I should concentrate on underrepresented artists.

you know… women

Historically female artists are not seen the way male artists are. This is evident by the fact that many female painters who created notable works used male names or pseudonyms to sign their work. It seemed as though it was more important for their work to be seen than for the female artist to have credit for it. It seems females have not been taken seriously, and yet, throughout history there are countless (suspected) examples of female art that has been attributed to male counterparts. With that, my focus shifted.

I then developed a series exploring twelve artists- all female. I researched artists that were very well known, and a few that weren’t. Each inspired me for a different reason. The foundation of art is vital, it is the gateway to creation, but it does not end there. We need the tools to create, we study other artists as well as their techniques to learn from what has already been accomplished. But then we take it further, we make it out own. We share our own voice.

As an artist myself, my work is my oxygen, it is my prayer. It is a way to show the inner most vulnerable part of me. When I am at my best, I create with my soul and not so much with studied techniques. In her voice- is a series of women that have accomplished their art with meaning and intent. They create to share what moves them, what calms them, what shares their soul.

For this series – the artists I have studied and will represent are Faith Ringgold, Lee Krasner, Alma Thomas, Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, Georgia O’Keeffe, Berthe Morisot, Hilma af Klint, Heather Day, Harriet Powers, Beatriz Milhazes, and Emily Carr.

This series is not to inspire you to create exactly like the artists mentioned, it is more to be inspired by and learn from the artists. In Her Voice is a way for you to listen and see differently. It is a way for you to know the women that have gone before you and be inspired by them and their journey. It is a way to take a moment for yourself, to be truly creative and step into another world, a world in which women are honored and uplifted. A world where your only task is to be open to creativity, and the inspiration laid before you.

This series in September. I hope you are curious enough to join me! You can find details for Faith Ringgold, Lee Krasner, and Alma Thomas by clicking the links attachted to their name.

Sending you so much love,

Susan

Welcome, July

Hello July

Hello July
Welcome July in a sassy way! It’s going to be a great month!

Well, hello there! Welcome to July. I wanted to take a moment to share all the fun things going on in my life.

First, I am not (typically) one to make a big deal out of my own birthday, however, this year, this month, both my husband and myself are turning sixty. I admit, I kind of don’t believe it. There are days my body sure does feel at LEAST sixty, but I feel like I am just getting started in so many ways. But, regardless of what is ahead, I am celebrating. I feel like more than ever, I am in awe of the preciousness of life, the countless gifts I have received, and the love that I have in my life. I AM one blessed human. I am ever so grateful.

That said! I am celebrating with a one-woman show at Sylvan Starlight Creations. I have been creating for a long time (see above) and I want to celebrate that! I am grateful to Sylvia Serry who owns the gallery for this invitational. The opening is on the fifteenth of July and should be downright fun! I will be demonstrating mixed media art as it is my great love! (one of them anyway) Sylvan Starlight Creations is found at 50 State St bldg c, Pittsford, NY 14534. The opening will be from 4-8 pm.  The show will be up through September!

Celebrating sixty years of life and creation!

Next, I have updated my workshops. At this point, I am very willing to facilitate workshops in person at the gallery or on a video chat. It is important everyone feels comfortable, but by all means, let’s be creative together!

you can find the listings on the website here: Create With Me

Join the Central Creatives for an open house!

Next up, (so much fun to share, isn’t there?) My beloved new home (well sorta new) is having an opening on July 30th! You can come to visit between 5-9 pm that evening. If that doesn’t work, PLEASE make an appointment- I would love to show you around! This is becoming my happy place! Make an appointment here: Susan Carmen-Duffy

Lastly, I HAVE SO MUCH FUN NEWS! I am going to press soon AND that means I will be offering a new subscription plan! Stay tuned! I think it is going to be really nifty and fun!  There are several to choose from right now- find them @ Greetings4Good.org

REALLY lastly, I hope you are doing okay. Covid has paused the world in such an unbelievable way. I feel like the ramifications are far-reaching for each of us. Personally, there have been struggles, sadness, and loss. What has profoundly saved me has been the practice of gratitude, my art, my family, (chosen and gifted family as well!). Be gentle with yourself. Be kind to others. If never before we understood that we are all in this together – we sure as heck should now.

A blue heart on a white background.
sending you love

That said… I am sending you big giant love.

Happy July!

Susan

Mixed Media Art

When I think about mixed media I cannot tell you how excited I get. For me, each medium in art has a unique and wonderful strength. There are several (in my opinion) that work incredibly well together. It is magic. I LOVE IT.

If you think this is a trendy form of art I will suggest to you that it is actually the opposite. Degas would use charcoal, pastels, and even printing inks all together in one piece. You can see some of Edgar’s works here. Picasso, DaVinci are also fine examples. I suppose my point is an opportunity that some of the greats have utilized.

I suppose I have never been a purist. I don’t cook by the book, nor do I create art that way. I love the power of a watercolor wash, the texture and depth that collage creates, I get darn excited by adding layers of colored pencil, ink, and maybe even a stitch or two.

Mixed media art feels like a way of life for me. While some might see it as an excuse to buy more art supplies, I see it as a way to use everything for the strongest possible component to create one strong piece of art.

This week begins a five-week workshop to explore mixed media techniques. We will not only explore each medium for the gift that it is, but we will also learn how to incorporate it utilizing several other mediums. I hope you will find some time to join us- you will be glad that you did.

Mixed Media Workshop Mixed media is the best of all the processes for art. (in my humble opinion)  Each medium has it’s own beautiful strength and lends itself to working in cooperation with others. This workshop will teach you the strengths and applications for a variety of media and then inspire you to apply them in your own unique and creative way.  Each week we will build on the previous week.

Welcome March

Well… it has been a heck of a winter. Personally there have been challenges and professionally I have not been painting nearly as much as I hoped. BUT! Spring is coming! As I write this, the sun is shining and all seems to be moving in the right direction.

Tonight opens Andrew Dumar’s “Layers of Illusion”. I honestly cannot wait for you to witness this exhibit. It is truly amazing. Please be sure to make time to see it this month.

The exhibit will be open for the month of March and after tonight you may make an appointment to see it, come to an event at the studio or stop in Wednesdays 10 am – 2 pm, Thursdays 3-7 pm, Fridays 2-5 pm and Saturdays 10 am – 3pm. Do make time to see this. It is incredible!

Create Art 4 Good and Greetings 4 Good just sponsored a month long inspiration called, “the month of love”. It seems silly to dedicate all that love to one day, so we spread it out. We sent notes and letters all month long using daily prompts. You can see what we were up to here: The Thoughtfulness Project.

Speaking of which- at the top of that page there is a little inspiration for March. It is definitely a feel good project- give it a shot.

So how are you doing with incorporating creativity in your life? I don’t know if you have heard, but creativity improves your health. Don’t believe me? Check this article out! In all seriousness, creativity helps to reduce stress, is an active mediation and frankly it is so many good things! I offer private workshops as well as group workshops. Take a chance on  you, no experience is required, only an open heart. Here are the current offerings, more to come!

I want to thank you- thank you for your support of Create Art 4 Good, for Greetings 4 Good. These are lifelong dreams come true. I simply cannot express the depth of my gratitude.

I hope your day is beautiful. Take time for yourself. Breathe a little. Smile intentionally and love so big.

Love & Peace to you always,

Susan
